ISkoot subscription and installation

Subscription is free of charge and it requires a Skype account. You need to specify the mobile phone number where to receive via sms the download link.

These are the ISkoot compatible handsets; Motorola t (RAZR V3, SLVR L7, PEBL, v557), Palm  (Treo 650, Treo 700p), Sony Ericsson t (v600i, w600i), Nokia ( 6021, 6102, 6600, 6680, 6682, 6030, E-series ).

If you can’t find your handset in the list, try to select the most similar one. A Java enabled mobile should work properly. I have a POEBL U6 and I selected the RAZR handset: everything went fine.

Register here and submit your phone number. Iskoot will send you via SMS the download link . Follow the link to download the .jar file via wap and install the VoIP software. The .jar file weighs about 92Kb.

You can also download the application on your PC and transfer it on your handset using a Bluetooth or IR connection (in this way you also cut the cost of the wap connection).

ISkoot will be available in the Java applications menu. The first time you start Iskoot you need to submit your Skype account. After a while, you'll see your Skype buddy list. Now you can receive Skype calls from your friends, call them and chat with them.

How Skype for Mobile works

  • Launch Iskoot on your mobile
  • Wait for your buddy list
  • When somebody call you
    • their call will be routed to a pre-set telephone number via SkypeOut, using your credit
  • When you call somebody from your mobile
    • Your call will be routed to your operator's GSM network and you will pay a local call.

When you call your friends on Skype, Iskoot use a local access point (a real telephone number) and route your Skype call to the GSM/GPRS network. The local access point is detected when you insert your mobile number in the subscription process. This is the reason why when you call with Skype from your mobile, you pay for a local GSM. Iskoot network has almost a worldwide coverage.

On the other side, when a buddy call you via skype and you are online via Iskoot, you pay their call using your SkypeOut credit.

Therefore, ISkoot is useful for emergencies and not because of its rates. There are other solutions for free VoIP calls (such as Truphone) but when you need to access to your buddy list or keep in touch with your Skype friends Iskoot can really help.
