HD Web is high definition internet tv in HD format. It’s an Akamai and Verizon project and it is your opportunity to do the wonderful experience of Tv in HD format and streaming.

I underline that we are dealing with nothing more than a business project, but I insist on spreading it among people because it gives you striking evidence of how internet TV is strikingly winning on ordinary, satellite and digital tv. I tried it by connecting a notebook to my HD TV and to the JBL audio system: the quality is really a s t o n i s h i n g !

System requirements for HD streaming

The system requirements  for such an advanced streaming quality are of high standard. The available resolutions for video data are two: 720p (1280x720) and 1080p (1920x1080). For a High Definition video you need an internet connection suitable for a 7,5 Mbps download speed. If then we want to exaggerate you need 13,5 Mbps, but for a 32”Hd TV 780p videos are enough.

You need a good quality pc for base videos and players:

How it works

HD Web is just a demonstrative site containing some musical videos, clips and HD videos. Whenever you’ll enter here your internet connection will be immediately checked up and in case you can’t reach a 7,4 Mbps speediness at least you will be shown an advice, but you can get into the site anyway.

Any video has its preview, in HD, that allows you to estimate all clips before starting with the streaming.

Musical clips and reportage introductions: give a glance to the wonderful BBC program Earth. But you can’t miss Elephant Dream in HD (10’ of real show with an heartbreaking audio!), the first cartoon open movie totally produced with opensource  means (Blender in particular) by Netherlands Media Art Institute.

As foresaid this WebTV is only a demo of a business project, but it is either enthusiastic and discouraging (at least for the italian situation).

It is enthusiastic because it underlines that internet Tv is:

• Freedom of choice
• Freedom of information
• Quality
• Entertainment
  

And, on the other side, it discourages because during streaming my Net Meter on my PC indicated a 8/9 Mbps download speediness. So the question rises spontaneously: will it ever be possible in Italy to start a similar project with such a consistent band width requirements (server side particularly) ?

Most of our domestic internet operators are nonetheless known as to be providers of the worst and most expensive services in Europe (apart from NGI even if its costs are quite high).
